Arriving to a THEME

Theme close to my heart

Brainstorming… coming to a final decision
After thinking of the various things I can do, I realised they seemed to be gearing towards negative issues with negative representation. I decided to change my perspective because what I wanted to address the issue however from a more of inspiring and uplifting mood then demoralising. So my mother came to my mind..
I decided to do an art to represent her. Her life and her story. I wanted to share about her because I think she is one of the most strong-willed person I ever have in my life. She is a simple person yet she has the strongest will to weather the storm in her life. I have also decided to use flower to represent her because she likes gardening.

Using my mum’s life testimony, I wanted to show that flower- a symbol of vulnerable, has the strongest will power to bear through the harshness of the weather. Life is not beautiful because it is all perfect but because of the imperfect that makes it strong.

Research on flowers

Initially I thought of using different flowers for the
different stages of my mother's life.

But I remembered that we used to have ginger flowers.
Ginger flowers to me signifies versatility and as well as resilience.
So I started focussing on the growth stages of 'torch ginger flower'.

Batik dyes as my main medium

The reason why I wanted to use fabric and to do batik hand painting is because textile has always been related to women. I wanted to represent this traditional craft into art form in my work.

Stop & Reflect: when discussing with Paul and class. I have decided to focus on wrapping using batik. As fabric is a material for covering and batik cloth is related to clothes and the wearing. Furthermore, wrapping an object creates a sense of mystery, it also give new meaning to the object. By wrapping it with images that represent my mum, I wanted to convey her importance to me.

Artists references

In Christo's  landscape wrapping artwork,  He used the abstractionist approach to wrap the artwork, drawing viewer to have new aesthetic interpretation/perspective of the object.

Amanda Heng's artwork portrays feminine's duty and obligation in a patriarchal family. It has given me an inspiration. I want to use dinning table but the approach will be my respond to my mother- Love and joyfulness and resilience in life.
